Summary

Presented By: Gabriel Vidal, M.D.

An ischemic stroke occurs when the arteries to the brain are narrowed or blocked, causing a significant reduction in the blood flow.  This lack of flow results in brain cells not receiving enough oxygen and nutrients, and this may cause cells to die immediately.  Approximately 32,000 neurons (cells in the brain) die each second when a stroke is occurring.  The sooner a patient with a stroke receives medical treatment, the better the chances for a good oucome.  It is important for everyone to know the signs and symptoms of stroke and what to do if they identify them.
