McGehee Pre-K Visits Labor & Delivery for Sibling Class

(October 18, 2013) Pre-K students from Louise S. McGehee School for Girls visited Ochsner's Labor & Delivery floor October 8 - 11 to learn all about caring for a newborn sister or brother from the nursing staff there. Jeni Ducoing, Kristen Malkiewicz, Amanda Lagarde, Kimberly Moline, Tabitha Duvernay, and Julia Azzinari prepared each girl to be a great older sister to her new or current younger sibling. Dr. Alam Receives NIH Grant for BEST Science! Project

(October 7, 2013) Dr. Jawed Alam, AVP for Research, and the BEST Science! Program have been awarded a grant-in-aid of $71,000 from the National Institutes of Health to supplement the $1.25 million, 5-year Science Education Partnership Award (SEPA) received last year to fund the project. This supplemental award will allow the program to increase its capacity from 20 to 40 teachers in its second year of operation. Click here to read the full story


The CHOP Program Kicks off Another Exciting Session

(September 27, 2013) September is National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, and Ochsner’s CHOP program has kicked off another exciting semester. The CHOP Program (Cooking up Healthy Options and Portions) is a free, 10-week after school cooking program designed to teach middle school students to prepare healthy meals and feel more confident in the kitchen. Click here to read the full story


South Louisiana Teachers Learn Cell Biology & Cancer Curriculum through BEST Science! Program

(August 27, 2013) Ochsner Academic Outreach is kicking off phase two of the first year of its BEST Science! Bioscience Enrichment Program for high school science teachers in partnership with LSU Health Sciences Center and funded by a $1.25 million Science Education Partnership Award (SEPA) grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Click here to read the full story

The Seventh Annual STAR Program Has Begun!

(June 24, 2013) Ochsner would like to officially welcome the STAR Class of 2013 Student Scholars! The STAR Program runs each summer and is designed to foster a rich sense of awareness in the worlds of Science, Technology, Academics, and Research in area high school students. STAR is composed of various clinical and hospital rotations, significant research and lab activity, and unique opportunities for exposure to the many facets of a large, teaching hospital and medical system such as Ochsner. Brownie Girl Scouts Earn their Home Scientist Badges at Ochsner

(April 22, 2013) On Saturday, April 13, Academic Community Outreach hosted the fourth annual Brownies Science in Action! Day at OMC - Kenner. A total of 51 Brownie Girl Scouts from the New Orleans area completed four experiments and one group activity with the help of 17 Ochsner employee volunteers from throughout the system. Power Ties 2013 Introduces 8th Graders to Healthcare Careers

(March 5, 2013) On Thursday, February 28, Ochsner’s Academic Outreach office held its Seventh Annual Power Ties Event, this year at Ochsner Baptist Medical Center. With partners New Orleans Outreach, the Junior League of New Orleans, and Samuel J. Green Charter School, Academic Outreach provided an opportunity for 8th graders to expand their knowledge of the professional world of healthcare.  Click here to read the full story


2013 SACNAS National Conference to Be Held in October

(February 13, 2013) Join over 3,700 attendees for four days of scientific research presentations, professional development, networking, exhibits, culture, and community! Programming is specifically tailored to support undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and career professionals at each transition stage of their career as they move towards positions of science leadership. This year's conference, entitled “Strengthening the Nation Through Diversity, Innovation and Leadership in STEM" will be held in San Antonio, Texas, October 3-6.  Click here for more information
