Dr. Deryk Jones is the Section Head of Sports Medicine and Cartilage Restoration at Ochsner Clinic Foundation and is the team physician for the New Orleans Hornets NBA team and New Orleans Saints NFL team. Dr. Jones received his Bachelor Degrees in Science and Philosophy from Emory University and then received a Doctorate of Medicine from Stanford University School of Medicine. Dr. Jones then completed an internship in general surgery at Brigham and Women's Hospital, and residency training in orthopaedic surgery at the Harvard Combined Orthopaedics Residency Program in Boston. On completion of residency training he was selected to complete his chief resident position as a junior faculty member at the Massachusetts General Hospital. He received further training completing a fellowship in sports medicine at the University of Pittsburgh with Drs. Freddie Fu, Christopher Harner, J.P. Warner and James Bradley. On completion of training he joined the faculty of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Tulane University School of Medicine at the rank of Assistant Professor and currently holds an appointment as Clinical Assistant Professor. While at Tulane, Dr. Jones served as team physician for the Dilliard, SUNO and Xavier University basketball teams. He was also team physician for the New Orleans Brass Hockey Team of the East Coast Professional Hockey League and the New Orleans Thunder Football Team of the Regional Professional Football League. While on staff at Tulane University School of Medicine he was involved in and currently remains active in cutting edge basic science research on cartilage metabolism and regeneration, bone-tendon healing, periosteum cell characterization as well as softball and baseball throwing mechanics. Currently, as a Council of Delegate member of the American Orthopaedic Society of Sports Medicine (AOSSM) he represents the state of Louisiana and is involved in policy decisions concerning sports medicine at the national level. Through his involvement with the AOSSM he serves on the Preparticipation Physical Examination (PPE) Task Force whose primary objective is to review, evaluate and write the 3rd edition of the Preparticipation Physical Evaluation Manuscript published by McGraw-Hill Company. This publication serves as a reference source and provides the PPE forms used by all schools at the high school, College and Professional levels for athletic clearance. Dr. Jones is also one of the founding members of the Cartilage Repair Centers of America, an organization focused on the study of the natural history of cartilage lesions as well as the outcomes following our current operative techniques used to treat these lesions. Dr. Jones's clinical subspecialty is in sports medicine and cartilage regeneration treating pathologic conditions of the shoulder, elbow, hip, knee and ankle. Some specific techniques offered by Dr. Jones are meniscal transplantation performed through arthroscopic-assisted or open means, autologous chondrocyte implantation (Carticel) which regenerates damaged articular cartilage in the joint, and fresh osteochondral allograft reconstruction replacing damaged bone and cartilage in situations of extensive joint pathology. He also is quite skilled in minimally invasive joint replacement and traumatic fixation surgery of the knee, shoulder and elbow. Further, he has extensive experience in arthroscopic surgery for shoulder instability, rotator cuff tears, knee ligament injuries as well as hip, elbow and ankle pathology.
