Joel Marcus, PsyD joins Ochsner as Director of Psychosocial Oncology & Palliative Care Services. He joins the Hematology-Oncology department and Ochsner Cancer Institute’s Gayle & Tom Benson Cancer Center.
Dr. Marcus is a clinical psychologist who brings over a decade of experience in the development and implementation of Psychosocial Oncology, End of Life, and Palliative Care Service. Dr. Marcus has worked at the Scott & White Clinic in Texas doing post-doctoral work in clinical hypnosis and psychosocial palliative care under the mentoring of Gary Elkins, PhD. He also worked at the Central Texas Research Center and UT-HSC in San Antonio and, most recently, the Nevada Cancer Institute in Las Vegas, NV. He is currently on the Board of APOS, the American Psycho-Oncology Society.
Dr. Marcus will work closely with our multi-disciplinary teams including Lung Cancer, Head & Neck Cancer, Neuro-oncology, and Bone Marrow Transplantion to provide requisite and clinically important psychosocial care. This will involve collaboration with our Pediatric Hematology-Oncology colleagues. He will also work with members of our Palliative Care program.
Within the cancer center, the Psychosocial Oncology unit should be viewed as the advocate of patient-centered care. Its mission is to pursue maximal quality of life for all patients at all stages of illness and all stages of treatment.
