Dr. Matthew McQueen is a Family Physician with additional training and board certification in Sports Medicine. His practice includes typical primary care and also care of athletes and non-athletes with musculoskeletal and medical problems. Dr. McQueen is an assistant to Dr. Aaron Karlin with the athletic concussion management program. Matthew McQueen received an A.B. degree from Duke University in Chemistry and German in 1984. After graduating medical school at the University of Tennessee, Memphis he served two years in general surgical residency. He completed the curriculum at the Naval Aviation Medicine Institute in Pensacola, became a Flight Surgeon and ultimately achieved the rank of Navy Captain. He completed the Ochsner Family Practice Residency in New Orleans and the Hughston Clinic Sports Medicine Fellowship in Columbus, Georgia. He is board Certified in Family Practice and has a Certificate of Additional Qualification (CAQ) in Sports Medicine. Dr. McQueen is also a graduate of the College of Naval Command and Staff, Naval War College holding a Master of Arts degree in Strategic Studies.
Dr. McQueen is the team physician for the New Orleans Pelicans (formerly Hornets) and formerly the New Orleans VooDoo. Other affiliations include team physician or consultant to Delgado Community College, University of New Orleans, Xavier University, Southern University New Orleans, Dillard University, Jefferson Parish School system and De La Salle High School. Dr. McQueen was a volunteer physician at the 2002 Salt Lake Winter Olympics and has been a staff physician at Ochsner since 1997.
Matthew McQueen has a lifelong interest in soccer as a player and youth coach. He earned United States Soccer Federation (USSF) National "C" and National "Youth" level licenses and coached young athletes of Lafreniere Soccer Club (now known as Louisiana Chicago Fire Juniors). He is a firm believer in exercise as disease prevention and maintains an active life through running, weight lifting and swimming. As Medical Director for Ochsner's Elmwood Fitness Center, he works with programs that educate and promote exercise as prevention and treatment for illnesses associated with inactivity.
