Dr. Hesse succeeded Dr. Thom Zimmerman as Chairman in 1984. He has served as president of the Louisiana-Mississippi Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology Society, president of the ophthalmology section of the Southern Medical Association and is the author of numerous articles concerning oculoplastics, orbital tumors and orbital blood flow to the optic nerve. Dr. Hesse graduated with highest honors from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and earned his medical degree from Tulane, where he also graduated with honors. After his internship at the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville, he entered the US Air Force and attained the rank of Major. Upon discharge he returned to New Orleans and completed his ophthalmology residency at Ochsner. Dr. Hesse joined the Ochsner staff in 1980 and currently holds a Clinical Professorship at LSU. His post-doctoral education includes an executive MBA degree in healthcare clinics from Tulane. Dr. Hesse is a board certified ophthalmologist and is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. In 2002, 2005 and 2007, the Consumer Research Council selected him as one of the "Top Ophthalmologists in America" and he has been selected by peer group survey "Best Doctors in America" every year since 2001.
