Vice Chairman Section Head, Pediatric Nephrology and Hypertension Dr. Cunningham is the head of the section of pediatric nephrology and hypertension at Ochsner for Children, of the Ochsner Clinic Foundation. He is a graduate of the University of Toronto with a BS in chemistry, attended and graduated from the Medical College of Wisconsin and did pediatric residency training at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina. He then went to the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston and did a pediatric nephrology fellowship. He remained there as an assistant and associate professor of pediatrics until 1981 when he moved to the Cleveland Clinic to develop a program in pediatric nephrology. He established an active pediatric dialysis and transplant program & developed an interest in pediatric hypertension. He has participated in numerous multi-center trials testing the safety and efficacy of antihypertensive agents in children. While at the Cleveland Clinic from 1981-2004, he served as the pediatric residency director for 6 years, served as vice chairman of pediatrics, was elected as the president of the Cleveland Clinic Medical staff and served as an interim chairman of pediatrics. He has been named as one of the 'Best Doctors in America' in 1993, 1998, 2003, and 2007. He has published over 60 articles regarding pediatric renal disease and hypertension, has written 23 book chapters and has edited the textbook, An Intensive Review of Pediatrics. In January of 2004, he moved to New Orleans with plans to develop a pediatric nephrology and Hypertension program at Ochsner for Children.
