The patient’s caregiver or a family member is encouraged to participate in the therapeutic environment with the guidance of the rehab team.
PHYSICAL THERAPY The goal of physical therapy is independence through development of strength and safe mobility. A physical therapist guides you through exercise and activities to strengthen muscles and improve endurance and coordination.
OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY Occupational therapists assist patients in regaining a functional way of life. Treatment teaches management of daily tasks such as eating, dressing, and bathing, plus techniques to increase strength, endurance, and mobility. Special equipment may also be recommended for even more independence.
SPEECH/LANGUAGE PATHOLOGY Speech/language pathologists help patients achieve their highest level of communication. Therapy is individualized according to immediate and future needs. Patients may be treated for impairments and involving swallowing, verbal expression, hearing comprehension, speech articulation, reading, writing, attention, problem solving and memory. Information is provided to family members to stimulate and improve everyday communication.
SOCIAL SERVICES works in close coordination with rehab services for appropriate discharge placement, obtaining durable medical equipment, communication with families, and assisting in organizing family training.
RECREATION THERAPY Use of free time is a very important part of rehabilitation. Recreation therapists help patients develop skills in new activities as well as develop adaptations for previous leisure pursuits. Patients learn the community resources that provide opportunities to turn techniques learned into fun activities.
HOME EVALUATIONS are performed in conjunction with Ochsner Home Health Services as indicated for wheelchair, scooter, walker, cane access and safety.
