Inpatient Referral Process

The Regional Referral Center is staffed with RN Administrative Coordinators who facilitate the transfer of your patient to Ochsner Health System with one call by coordinating triage, registration, communication with accepting physician, bed assignment and patient transportation via ambulance or air. Additionally, Ochsner will communicate important patient updates directly with the referring physician.

Overview of Regional Referral Center Process:

 

  • Referring facility or physician office calls the Regional Referral Hotline
  • Transfer Center RN conducts three way call between the referring physician and the Ochsner-accepting physician
  • Transfer Center RN completes the registration process once acceptance is confirmed
  • Transfer Center RN communicates with the referring hospital to coordinate transportation arrangements (ground ambulance or Flight Care)

 

Information needed from referring facility:

 

  • Patient name
  • Date of birth
  • Diagnosis
  • Social security number
  • Patient location (ED, Med/Surg, ICU, MD Office)
  • Name and contact number of the person calling
  • Referring physician and contact phone number
  • Status of transfer (Emergent vs. Non-emergent)
  • Reason for transfer
