Ochsner Joins Power Ties with the New Orleans Junior League
NEW ORLEANS, LA Today, Friday, April 20, 2007, Ochsner Medical Center, 1514 Jefferson Highway, will host the New Orleans Junior League Power Ties Program. Ochsner will welcome 15 students from Samuel J. Green Charter School in Uptown New Orleans to participate in these job shadowing opportunities including: the Ochsner Blood Bank, Ochsner Cancer Institute, Philanthropy, Volunteer Services, and Information Systems.
Power Ties is a career awareness program that links professionals from various occupations with eighth-grade students. This program was created by New Orleans Outreach and operates in partnership with the Junior League and the Young Leadership Council. It consists of a series of workshops, held at the school site, in which Junior League volunteers teach students how to fill out a job application, write a resume, and dress for success.
In addition to the seminars, there is a job site program that allows students to visit various local business and job shadow for a day. With the severe healthcare staff shortages throughout the region, this is an opportunity for Ochsner to showcase its various career opportunities and get students thinking early about a possible career in medicine and healthcare, says Warner Thomas, President and Chief Operating Officer of Ochsner Health System.
The Power Ties program ends with a career fair at a special off-campus site. Mock “potential employers” meet with students to test their newly-learned interviewing skills. After the interviews, students are treated to a business luncheon.
