NEW ORLEANS – Running specialty store Varsity Sports has partnered with Elmwood Fitness Center, making it the fourth location for the nationally-recognized business. More than a shoe store, the new Varsity Sports Elmwood Running & Fitness trains runners through group runs and sponsors area races in addition to educating customers through professional foot and gait analysis and proper shoe fittings.
“It’s a natural partnership for us,” said owner Jenni Peters. “Ochsner Health System and Elmwood Fitness Center are focused on health and wellness and that’s what we’re all about. We’re very excited to be a part of the team.”
Peters, whose credentials include being a previous member of the U.S. Track and Field team and a participant in the first Olympic Marathon Trials for Women in 1984, first opened Varsity Sports in Baton Rouge in 2000 as the area's only running specialty store. With its superior customer service and knowledgeable staff, demand led to expansion into Mandeville and uptown New Orleans. Varsity Sports has been nationally recognized as Runner’s World magazine’s Best Store in the Southeast for two years in a row.
Peters says building relationships with her customers and her community is an integral part of Varsity Sports’ culture. With over 5,000 fans on Facebook, the company is in touch with its clients daily regarding group runs, marathon training, new products and store events – and its clients respond as if speaking to an old friend.
“We’ll be celebrating Varsity Sports’ arrival during the evening of our Twilight Run,” said Randy Strassel, General Manager of Elmwood Fitness Center. “We hope all of our runners and our non-runners will join us in welcoming them to the Elmwood family.”
