NEW ORLEANS – Ochsner Medical Center and Ochsner Medical Center – West Bank* were named as one of America’s 100 BestTM hospitals by Healthgrades, the leading online resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals. By earning this distinction, Ochsner is among the nation’s top two percent of hospitals.
To determine the nation’s best performing hospitals based on objective measures of clinical quality, Healthgrades evaluated over 4,500 hospitals nationwide. To be recognized with this distinction, hospitals must have had performed better than expected across 21 conditions and procedures from 2010 to 2012 consistently, year after year, for a minimum of four years.
From 2010 to 2012, Healthgrades America’s 100 BestTM hospitals, as a group, had an overall 24.53% lower risk-adjusted mortality rate across 19 procedures and conditions where in-hospital mortality was the clinical outcome, compared to all other hospitals in the nation. From 2010 to 2012, if all other hospitals had performed at the level of Healthgrades America’s 100 Best Hospitals, 160,701 lives could have potentially been saved nationwide.
Variation in hospital performance exists locally as well as nationally. For example, of the 5 hospitals evaluated located in the city of New Orleans, LA for treatment of Heart Failure, risk-adjusted in-hospital mortality rates ranged from 1.5% on the low end to 5.0% on the high end, which is an over 3-fold difference in mortality rates.
“Across the nation, hospitals achieve this distinction for providing better than expected outcomes across a broad spectrum of conditions and procedures over an extended period of time,” said Evan Marks, EVP, Informatics and Strategy, Healthgrades. “For consumers, this means that they can expect a commitment to exceptional clinical quality care when choosing among Healthgrades’ America’s 100 BestTM hospitals.”
Healthgrades America’s 100 BestTM Hospitals Award recognizes hospitals for consistent clinical excellence by identifying those that received a Healthgrades Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence™ for the most consecutive years. To be eligible for the Healthgrades Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence, a hospital had to have been evaluated for its performance in at least 21 of the 30 Healthgrades procedures and conditions, based on Medicare inpatient data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Medicare Provider Analysis and Review (MedPAR) database.
