Ochsner And Habitat Build Foundations For Families

Total number of volunteers: 49. Total number of hours: 240. Total aches and pains: Immeasurable. Knowing that you helped build a safe, secure home for a family in need: PRICELESS!

null On September 17 and 24, employees from across the system came together to support and enhance our communities by working with Habitat for Humanity. We worked with the Habitat organizations in Baton Rouge, Slidell, Thibodaux and New Orleans. The volunteers had a great time and helped with everything from laying foundations to building and raising walls to painting and cleaning. Because of the efforts of these Ochsner employees, six families will have a safe, affordable and well built home to call their own. Having their own home provides a solid foundation so these families can grow and thrive.

David Connick, from New Orleans, said “I really enjoyed taking part in the Habitat event again this year. It's very rewarding to take part in the effort to provide quality, affordable housing - and more so to provide a ‘home’ for a local family.” Mary O’Neal, from Slidell, added “I was excited to learn how to use a nail gun and the air hammer. And to have a part in nailing in the straps and putting in floor joists for a house was a new experience that was somewhat empowering. We worked hard, but had a good time. And the people from Habitat for Humanity were wonderful!!”

All of the volunteers for the Habitat events used Operation Outreach to sign-up for and track their time working on the houses. Operation Outreach is an online database of meaningful volunteer opportunities geared toward Ochsner employees to get them involved in our communities. Not only can you search for and sign-up for a variety of events, you can track your volunteer time for those events. You can even track your time spent on independent volunteer activities. This means that Operation Outreach provides you with one location to track all your volunteer service which can be very helpful for your Nursing clinical ladder and/or annual review. For more information, log-in to Operation Outreach or contact operationoutreach@ochsner.org.

We had such a great time working with Habitat! A very special thanks to all the Ochsner volunteers who helped make these Habitat events so successful.
