NEW ORLEANS - In Camp Fallujah, Iraq, U.S. Marines recently received a long-awaited care package from the employees of Ochsner Baptist Medical Center. The troops weren't the only ones receiving gifts that day; Ochsner Baptist employees also sent medical supplies, shoes, and toys to local Iraqi children.
Being stationed overseas, many of the troops requested comfort items that reminded them of home, but one of their requests took Ochsner Baptist employees by surprise. "One of their requests was a guitar, of all things. Of course, they asked for things like energy bars, playing cards and bath towels, but we were surprised to see that they wanted a guitar," said Cynthia Faciane of Ochsner Baptist Medical Center.
And a guitar, among other items like non-perishable foods, CD's and DVD's, is exactly what they got. The Ochsner Baptist Operating Room staff raised funds to buy and ship a brand new guitar, while other employees purchased hundreds of other requested items to send to Iraq.
"The pediatricians in Iraq know first hand what the children in Iraq need and we tried to meet some of their requests by sending antibacterial ointment, children's vitamins, children's chewable Tylenol and 18 pairs of children's shoes," said Donna Martin, Director of Nursing, Ochsner Baptist Medical Center.
