Ochsner Baton Rouge’s Dr. Jay Brooks Named to Louisiana Cancer and Lung Trust Fund Board

BATON ROUGE, LA - Dr. Jay Brooks, MD, Chairman of the Ochsner Baton Rouge Hematology/Oncology Department, has been appointed to the Louisiana Cancer and Lung Trust Fund Board by Governor Bobby Jindal.

The mission of the Louisiana Cancer and Lung Trust Fund Board is to reduce the incidence, morbidity, mortality, and economic impact of cancer on the residents of Louisiana. To accomplish its mission, the Board plans, coordinates and monitors statewide efforts that target cancer through education, prevention, research, surveillance, and early detection and screening.

As Chairman of the Ochsner Baton Rouge Hematology/Oncology Department, Dr. Brooks is extremely active in the fight against cancer and efforts to educate others about cancer prevention methods.  Dr. Brooks has been on staff at Ochsner since 1987.  He has held a variety of leadership positions including Chief of Medicine, Chief of Medical Subspecialties, Chairman of the Research Committee, membership on the Research Advisory Committee, a former member of the Board of Governors of Ochsner Clinic Foundation and the former Chief of Staff of Ochsner Medical Center – Baton Rouge. 

Dr. Brooks earned his medical degree from LSU. He completed his residency at Charity Hospital in New Orleans and his fellowship at the National Cancer Institute's Warren Grant Magnuson Clinical Research Center in Bethesda, Maryland. He is board certified in internal medicine and medical oncology. He has written several articles for scientific medical publications and has written chapters for several oncology textbooks. Dr. Brooks' expertise is in lung cancer, breast cancer treatment and prevention and cancer genetics.
