Ochsner ENTs Using PlasmaBlade to Cool Tonsil Removal

BATON ROUGE, LA - Ochsner ENTs are now using the latest PEAK® Surgery System to remove tonsils and adenoids in young children. The system which includes the PULSAR® Generator and the PEAK PlasmaBladeTM combines the benefits of a traditional scalpel and an electrosurgical device.

"We have been using the PlasmaBladeTM for several months now and have seen tremendous results," says Ochsner ENT Amy Rabalais, MD. Dr. Rabalais and her partner, Dr. Teresa King are both using the system, which allows them to make precise incisions and cauterize at the same time. "Because this device can make incisions at half the temperatures of traditional electrosurgical devices we see significantly less heat transfer to the tissue and ultimately less damage." In addition, Dr. Rabalais says patients enjoy the following benefits:
• Reduced scarring
• Quicker, less painful recovery
• Faster, stronger wound healing

How does it work? The PULSAR® Generator uses pulses of plasma-mediated charges sent through the PlasmaBladeTM. The energy is provided in short bursts which makes for a smoother operation when compared to traditional instruments.

A tonsillectomy is one of the most common surgical procedures performed on children under age 15. "Recent guidelines have changed as far as which patients would benefit most from having their tonsils removed," says Dr. King. "For those patients who would benefit from surgery, such as children with interrupted sleep, we want to be able to offer them a surgical option that can quickly get them back to a normal life."

Drs. Rabalais and King say their patients traditionally recover in just one week after having their tonsils removed with the PlasmaBladeTM.
