Ochsner Honors Medical Pioneer at John Ochsner Heart & Vascular Institute Dedication World-Renowned Cardiothoracic Surgeon Dr. John Ochsner Honored at Private Unveiling NEW ORLEANS - On Saturday, January 24, 2009 at 6:00pm, Ochsner will honor world-renowned cardiothoracic heart surgeon and medical pioneer Dr. John Ochsner as it celebrates the dedication of the "John Ochsner Heart and Vascular Institute." Dr. John Ochsner is the Chairman Emeritus of the Department of Surgery at Ochsner Medical Center. During a private, invitation-only ceremony at 1514 Jefferson Highway, Brent House Conference Center, Dr. Ochsner will be honored by unveiling a bust in his image to be displayed in the Institute and honored by an esteemed group of colleagues and friends including: "¢ Dr. Denton Cooley, M.D., Mentor and pioneering American heart surgeon to implant an artificial heart. "¢ Dr. John R. Busby, M.D., former student and Cardiothoracic Surgeon in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. "¢ Dr. Michael McFadden, M.D., former student, Cardiothoracic Surgeon, and Professor of Clinical Cardiothoracic Surgery and the Surgical Director of Lung Transplantation at the University of Southern California "¢ Dr. Meredith Scott, M.D., former student and Cardiothoracic Surgeon in Orlando, Florida. "¢ Dr. Frank Riddick, M.D., colleague, former Ochsner Medical Foundation CEO Emeritus, and recipient of the 2005 Ochsner Lifetime Achievement Award. "¢ Warner Thomas, President and Chief Operating Officer of Ochsner Health System "¢ King Milling, Former President of Whitney National Bank "¢ Marc Mellon, one of America's foremost representational sculptors, known for his portrait busts and commemorative statues. His works have been displayed worldwide. "¢ Louie Roussel, friend and donor of the Bust About Dr. John Ochsner, M.D. Dr. John Ochsner pioneered cardiac surgery in Louisiana and the surrounding area performing many "medical firsts" in our region; the first installation of a pacemaker, valve replacement, coronary artery bypass, various congenital heart operations, and transplantation of the liver, lung and heart. He has received numerous local, national and international awards and published nearly 300 publications, scientific articles, and book chapters. Dr. John Ochsner has been President of 10 different surgical societies and is the only person in history to be President of the American Association of Thoracic Surgery, President of the International Society for Cardiovascular Surgery, and Chairman of the Board of Thoracic Surgery. Dr. Ochsner received his Medical Degree from Tulane University School of Medicine and completed his residency at the University of Michigan and Baylor College of Medicine. He was chief resident at Jefferson Davis Hospital and Texas Children's Hospital and served in the Department of Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine before returning to New Orleans. In 1961, he joined the Ochsner Clinic, and in 1966 began serving as Chairman of the Department of Surgery for 22 years. Much of Dr. Ochsner's time has been devoted to public service, having served on three school boards, many charity organizations and President of the World Trade Center. He is the son of Dr. Alton Ochsner, one of the five founders of Ochsner Health System, who in 1941 established the first multi-specialty group practice in the South.
