Free, Public Event Offers Diabetic Lifestyle, Medical and Insurance Information
NEW ORLEANS - As Spring is a time of renewal, Ochsner is hosting a Diabetes Spring Fest to replenish local residents on ways to live well with the disease. On Saturday, March 15, 2008, from 8am-12pm, Ochsner will provide information on the latest diabetes medical options and lifestyle changes, in addition to a continental breakfast at Ochsner Medical Center: 1514 Jefferson Highway, 2nd floor Brent House Conference Center.
"Nearly 17 million Americans live with diabetes and with the proper diet, exercise, medication and regular check-ups, many complications from diabetes could be prevented; therefore, we're very excited about this year's program,´ says Anita Richard, APRN, Medical Director of Ochsner's Diabetes Management Program. "This year we will also include information on understanding medical insurance options for diabetics and an inspirational speaker who has diabetes and competes in marathons around the country."
Risk factors for diabetes include:
- Family history of diabetes (parents or siblings with diabetes)
- Race/ethnicity (African Americans, Hispanic Americans, Native Americans, Asian Americans, and Pacific Islanders are more likely to have diabetes)
- Previously identified impaired fasting glucose or impaired glucose tolerance
- Low HDL cholesterol level and/or a high triglyceride level
- History of gestational diabetes mellitus or delivery of babies over 9 lbs
