Employee and Community Blood Donations Go Toward Purchase of Wii Games
NEW ORLEANS - Summer is typically a very slow time for blood donations, and the tremendously popular Nintendo® WiiTM is offering Ochsner Pediatric patients a wee bit of relief when it comes to hospitalization. The Ochsner Blood Bank has started the "WiiTM Want You to Commit to Life" campaign to encourage employees, patients and the public to donate blood in return for an in-house Nintendo WiiTM game for its Child Life Department. Currently, the system contains only the original games.
The gaming system will be used by Ochsner's in-patient pediatric patients, PICU (Pediatric Intensive Care Unit) patients, or for visiting siblings. "The high level of interaction that are trademarks of WiiTM games can help motivate coping in children in a developmentally appropriate way and can be utilized as a diversion for children undergoing procedures," says Child Life Specialist Phyllis Dotson.
"The WiiTM Want You to Commit to Life" campaign was developed as a way to raise healthy lifestyle and blood/organ donation awareness among college students and faculty when Ochsner participated in the LSU - Baton Rouge Student Health Fair on April 9, 2008," explains Ken Detiveaux, Director of the Ochsner Blood Bank. "We asked students to sign a "Commit to Life" pledge to lead healthy lifestyles including blood donation with Ochsner during LSU blood drives. In honor of these students, Ochsner bought the WiiTM Game System for its pediatric patients." The Ochsner Blood Bank also sponsored a drawing for an additional gaming system to students who pledged.
Detiveaux says, "Following LSU's Baton Rouge Commitment/Kickoff, we are continuing the campaign throughout the region and with every 50 blood donations on behalf of Ochsner Pediatrics, the Ochsner Blood Bank will purchase additional games for our hospitalized pediatric patients to use."
Anyone can donate blood at any Ochsner Blood Donor Center or Mobile Blood Drive and specify that their donation go toward a WiiTM game for Ochsner Pediatrics.
