NEW ORLEANS – On October, 13, 2012, Ochsner Medical Center-Kenner will partner with the Vineyard Church of New Orleans to bring a Community Vegetable Garden to feed those in need of food assistance.
The Community Vegetable Garden will be located at Ochsner-Kenner at 180 West Esplanade on the north side of the building behind the Medical Office Building, and will be open year-round.
“Through this partnership, we hope that people in our community will recognize this garden as a collective effort and will share our enthusiasm by becoming involved to help those in need.” said Paolo Zambito, CEO, Ochsner-Kenner.
Volunteers from both Ochsner-Kenner and Vineyard Church of New Orleans will prep and till the land, plant seeds, build raised garden beds, run a drip irrigation system and maintain the garden throughout the different seasons.
Fall vegetables will include carrots, cabbage, spinach and baby romaine lettuce. Replanting for a spring crop is scheduled for mid-January with plans to plant herb gardens in the summer.
Once the vegetables are harvested, they will be brought to the Vineyard Church of New Orleans’ Bag Hunger Food Pantry. The Food Pantry currently services 150 families in the Kenner area.
For those who need assistance, they can visit the Food Pantry the first Saturday of each month from 9-11 a.m. For more information on how to volunteer, call 504-467-3257.
