NEW ORLEANS – For the third consecutive year, Ochsner Medical Center was named one of the nation’s 100 Top Hospitals® and an Everest Award winner by Thomson Reuters. The 100 Top Hospitals® award winners demonstrate top performance on both how patients are cared for through clinical measures and how the hospital performs as an efficient business.
Within the list, Ochsner Medical Center was one of only 12 hospitals to receive the Everest Award, which honors hospitals that have achieved both the highest current performance and the fastest long-term improvement over five years.
In addition, Ochsner was one of 15 hospitals named in the "Major Teaching Hospital" category among peers such as The Methodist Hospital in Houston, Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pennsylvania and Vanderbilt University Medical Center. No other hospitals in Louisiana or Mississippi made the list.
The Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals® study is unique in that it evaluates hospitals on measures of overall organization performance, including patient care, operational efficiency, and financial stability. It measures the overall performance of nearly 3,000 U.S. hospitals in 10 key areas, including mortality, medical complications and patient safety.
“We strive every day to provide excellent, quality care in a safe and effective manner,” says Mike Hulefeld, CEO, Ochsner Medical Center. “This award assures us, and the community, that we are doing a good job and we are on par with the best our country has to offer.”
Based on comparisons between the study winners and a peer group of similar high-volume hospitals that were not winners, the study found that if all hospitals performed at the level of this year’s winners:
- More than 186,000 additional lives could be saved.
- Approximately 56,000 additional patients could be complication-free.
More than $4.3 billion could be saved.
- The average patient stay would decrease by nearly half a day.
