“100 Most Wired” Hospitals Lead Industry in Consumer-Directed Health Care

NEW ORLEANS - For the 6th year in a row, Ochsner Health System remains the only New Orleans hospital to be singled out as one of the nation's Most Wired, according to the results of the 2009 Most Wired Survey and Benchmarking Study released in the July issue of Hospitals & Health Networks magazine. The 100 Most Wired hospitals and health systems began in 1999 and Ochsner has been listed for the past six years. This year, Ochsner was also named as one of the top 25 Most Wireless hospitals in the United States.

"Healthcare information technology is a critical component of the healthcare delivery system. Since consumers are doing everything from booking travel to managing their finances from their living rooms, being a Most Wired hospital allows Ochsner to provide local residents with the same opportunities such as online appointment requests, online ER wait times, and electronic medical records," says Dr. Lynn Witherspoon, System Vice President and Chief Information Officer of Ochsner Health System.

The Most Wired Survey is conducted annually by Hospitals & Health Networks magazine, a publication of the American Hospital Association, which releases its annual list every July. The survey focuses on how the nation's hospitals' use information technology for quality, customer service, public health and safety, business processes and workforce issues.

Hospitals that are honored typically have superior patient satisfaction results in the following areas:
 95 percent patient satisfaction rates of Most Wired hospital's admissions process
 99 percent patient satisfaction of Most Wired hospital's physicians
 95 percent patient satisfaction in an overall assessment of Most Wired hospitals
 90 percent patient satisfaction of Most Wired hospital's discharge process

The nation's 100 Most Wired are also using information technology to improve quality, satisfaction and patient care by investing in technology to streamline business and clinical practices; to reduce medical errors; and to improve clinical outcomes.
