COVINGTON, LA – Millions of women use some form of birth control - whether a pill, patch, shot or implanted device - on a regular basis. “Birth control has come a long way in a short period of time,” says Ochsner OB/GYN Daniel Mokry, MD. “Oftentimes women find it difficult to remember to take a pill every day or they do not realize the complications of taking antibiotics and a birth control pill together. Now there are many, many options to fit every woman’s lifestyle and needs,” Dr. Mokry says.
One option now being offered by Ochsner North Shore physicians is the Essure insert which is a permanent, non-reversible form of birth control. “Essure is for women who have the family they want and do not want to have additional children,” says Dr. Mokry. He says the insert is placed inside the patient’s fallopian tube where it will work with the body’s natural response to create a barrier to prevent the sperm and egg from joining so that pregnancy does not occur.

“One of the great benefits of this birth control is that it does not contain or rely on hormones to prevent pregnancy,” says Dr. Mokry. “As a result the patient’s menstrual cycle is not affected and will occur naturally.” In addition, Dr. Mokry says Essure has a 99.8% effective rate for preventing pregnancies and is covered by most major insurance plans.
