Ochsner is a designated training center in the Gulf Coast for the da Vinci S Surgical System, by Intuitive Surgical, technology that allows physicians to perform intricate operations through tiny incisions, improving patient recovery times with less pain. Ochsner is one of a select few centers in the world with the S Elite model of da Vinci, and physicians throughout the Gulf South region and around the world will be trained at Ochsner on the S-model in techniques of minimally-invasive surgery; specifically in urology and gynecology. Ochsner is also the only hospital in the Gulf South graduating da Vinci certified resident physicians.
da Vinci offers patients with a minimally-invasive treatment option in a broad range of medical conditions. Ochsners investment in the da Vinci System began in 2005 performing laparoscopic prostatectomy, of which Ochsner is now a national leader. The technology enhances a physicians surgical capabilities and precision by scaling their exact hand movements into micro-instruments within the operative site. With da Vinci, a surgeon is seated at a console a few feet from the patient, operating through 1-2 cm incisions with the instruments replicating his exact movements. In addition to improved patient recovery times and less pain, the da Vinci also offers smaller incisions, less blood loss, and earlier return to full activity.
