NEW ORLEANS –   Ochsner Health System reached a milestone this week as the 5,000th patient this year was transferred to physicians within Ochsner Health System via Ochsner’s Regional Referral Center. Critically ill patients around the region are benefiting from the Regional Referral Center’s quick and seamless process which allows patients faster access to nationally acclaimed specialty care.

Ochsner created its Regional Referral Center in 2009 to eliminate the barriers associated with making patient transfers complicated and untimely, allowing for a faster and more efficient patient transfer and adding peace of mind to the families of these patients.

“Time is of the essence when transferring a critical patient for a higher level of care, which is why the Referral Center is such a necessity,” said Dr. Armin Schubert, Medical Director of the Ochsner Regional Referral Center. “Patients across the Gulf South can feel confident that they will be taken care of by a team of clinicians and nurses focused on the highest quality care for a wide array of complex medical or surgical illnesses.”

The Regional Referral Center is a one-stop-shop for physicians and nurses whose patients require specialized care. Via a single “hotline” number (1-855-OHSLINK), Registered Nurse Administrative Coordinators are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to facilitate the complete transfer process, accepting and registering patients, confirming bed assignments and providing transportation options.

Ochsner Medical Center is a 473-bed acute tertiary and quaternary care hospital employing over 600 physicians in 80 medical specialties and subspecialties. Ochsner is one of only 25 hospitals in the country to have 11 or more medical specialties ranked in the nation’s top 50, according to U.S. News & World Report’s 2012-13 Best Hospitals rankings. In 2012, Ochsner Medical Center also was named one of the nation’s 100 Top Hospitals by Thomson Reuters, one of the country’s 100 Great Hospitals by Becker’s Hospital Review, and a Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence by HealthGrades.
