KENNER, LA - Problems falling and staying asleep? It's a dilemma that shows no bias for age, race, and socio-economic level. By gauging the number of sleep aid advertisements, it's obvious that this problem troubles millions of Americans every night. Ochsner Health Center - Kenner is opening a new sleep medicine clinic at its 2120 Driftwood Blvd. location to help residents in Kenner get a good night's rest. Beginning September 24, 2008, the sleep clinic will be open for appointments on Wednesdays from 8:00am-12:00pm.

Loss of sleep isn't just a nuisance; it can be detrimental to one's quality of life, health, and productivity. Getting an inadequate amount of sleep can result in tiredness, irritability, easy frustration, and have a negative impact on concentration, productivity, mood, and your health. Many people used to believe that sleep was a passive part of our daily lives, but we know now that our brains are active during sleep, and sleep is a vital process for our well being.

Sleep problems often go undetected, as symptoms can be attributed to other ailments.  Some signs that may indicate a possible sleep disorder include:

  • Consistently not getting enough sleep, or getting poor quality sleep

  • Struggling to stay awake when physically inactive (such as while watching television or reading)

  • Performance problems or difficulty concentrating at work or school

  • Difficulty remembering things

  • Snoring, snorting, or finding yourself catching your breath while awakening from sleep

  • Difficulty controlling your emotions

Fortunately, there are also many things you can do to improve your sleep such as re-evaluating the following:

  • Diet and exercise patterns

  • Sleeping environment

  • Relaxation techniques

  • Personal habits and Lifestyle

Once you begin to see how a good night's sleep positively affects other aspects of your life, you can develop your own sleep plan. She also reminds patients that restorative sleep can be achieved with a better understanding of how we function and with a few adjustments in order to get the results you desire.
