Ochsner Summer Science Youth Academy Welcomes Students

Class of 2007 marks 1st year to offer full-day of research, classes, rotations and lab activities

NEW ORLEANS, LA Today, Ochsners Academic Division will welcome 11 students from the Class of 2007 to its Summer Science Youth Academy who will take part in a two-session, six-week intensive program. These Summer Science Scholars have demonstrated an interest in science and healthcare and have been recommended from their respective high schools. Ochsners Summer Science Youth Academy Program is designed for high school students who excel in the science arena an opportunity to participate in hands-on scientific research in a laboratory setting with research-funded scientists in the areas of Molecular Genetics, Molecular Cardiology, Pediatric Endocrinology, Cellular Immunology, and Infectious Diseases. Prior to beginning research in the lab, the students will have a one-two week wet lab orientation that will concentrate on lab technique fundamentals. The Youth Academy starts with a one-week orientation that introduces students to the hospital policies and procedures and the expectations of the summer program; working in a research lab setting; the functions of the Center for Health Research, Center for Knowledge Management; networking opportunities; and career development courses that provide the necessary skills such as presentation skills and effective teamwork. Students will spend the remaining five weeks working with our scientist, attending science classes, learning how to use the medical library for research purposes, attending mini lecture series, departmental rotations, character building book reviews and completing and final project. Upon successful completion of the program, students will unveil these projects and their research subjects at the Culmination Ceremony. Session I of the Academy begins today, Monday, June 4, and will end on Friday, July 13. This will include six Summer Science Scholars who will be led by an Academy Team Leader. Session II begins on Monday, June 18 and will end on Friday, July 27, and include five Summer Science Scholars.
