Mother-Baby Unit Offers Tailored, Personalized “Couplet Care”

GRETNA, LA - Ochsner Medical Center - West Bank Campus celebrates 25 years of spreading joy to local families by delivering over 45,000 babies in the Mother-Baby Unit. Since 1984, the unit has averaged 1,825 deliveries per year and celebrates some of the region's most tenured nurses, many with over 20 years of dedication to the unit.

"Chances are, if you were born at Ochsner Medical Center - West Bank Campus, you probably had your baby there as well - making the hospital a generational choice for many West Bank residents," said Joan Rooney, Assistant Vice President of Women's, Neonatal, and Primary Care Nursing at OMC - West Bank Campus.

Rooney credits the unit's 25 years of successful service, in part, to its tenured nursing staff, "Many of our nurses have been with us for over 20 years, and their reputation along with professional expertise offers residents the reassurance they're looking for when preparing for delivery."

A unique service offered at Ochsner - West Bank is "Couplet Care," in which mother and baby share a single registered nurse that offers personalized care for the new family in a one-on-one environment. "We assign each new mom and newborn their own "personal" RN who is familiar with every aspect of their visit; from the delivery room to patient room to education, and then tailors their care to what the family desires, all in a comfortable setting" explains Rooney.

If additional newborn care is required, Ochsner - West Bank has a Level III NICU. With fully staffed, 24/7 Neonatal Nurse Practitioners, Rooney says, "unique relationships are formed between the parents of premature babies and Neonatal Nurse Practitioners as we care for our community's tiniest patients." All Ochsner - West Bank Mother-Baby Unit registered nurses are Neonatal Resuscitation Certified and many possess Guided Infant Nursing Techniques (GIFT) certification, which qualifies them to offer advanced support for breast-feeding moms.
