Moms-To-Be Encouraged to Attend Baby Classes, not rely on Online Info
GRETNA, LA - There are some things the Internet can't replace and, according to Ochsner Medical Center - West Bank, tips on delivering and caring for a baby is definitely one of those instances. As the Internet Generation's attention spans grow shorter, more are turning to the Web for instant information, but the Family Unit nurses at Ochsner - West Bank Campus say often the best advice is given in person and shared by others.
"Online information is definitely easier for busy new moms, but the camaraderie and bonding in Lamaze classes cannot be replicated anywhere but in the classroom environment. The friendships that are formed over time become personal support groups, in fact, I still keep in touch with women I met in my first Lamaze class," said Joan Rooney, Assistant Vice President of Women's, Neonatal, and Primary Care Nursing at OMC - West Bank.
"We're concerned that Ochsner - West Bank Campus's perinatal class attendance has seen a downturn since the advent of ‘Internet learning'," says Rooney. Rooney goes on to say that the individuals who learn online may be receiving misinformation or information not personalized to their pregnancy. She identified the medical classroom environment as the only, proven place to receive safe, accurate information from qualified nurses, in a hands-on setting. Participation is recommended by 20 to 24 weeks gestation (into pregnancy).
Rooney says, even online video tutorials can't match the value of hands-on, guided instruction from a registered nurse. Ochsner Medical Center - West Bank Campus offers a wide range of courses each month to prepare new moms and dads for the delivery and care of their newborn. Perinatal services include:
