Programs Designed for a Healthier Workforce and Community
NEW ORLEANS - Ochsner Health System announces its 2008 New Year's Resolutions to create healthier lifestyle choices for the community. Through several new programs, the organization is offering financial incentives to eat smarter, increase exercise in schools, and develop an online, video medical library.
OCHSNER SMART MEALS: Eating healthy in New Orleans can be difficult, but Ochsner's SmartMeals are making it easier by offering meals that are low-cost ($2.25) and low-fat. SmartMeals will be available beginning January 15, 2008 at Ochsner Medical Center - Jefferson Highway and include an entrée and two vegetables. Smart Meals meet USDA caloric, saturated and trans-fat guidelines and include nutrition labels.
"As healthcare leaders, we're committed to creating a healthier workforce and community; therefore, it makes sense to set an example and offer the community heart-healthy options in our cafeterias and vending machines," explains Dr. Patrick Quinlan, Ochsner Health System Chief Executive Officer. Throughout 2008, the Smart Meals will be made available at additional Ochsner locations.
ON THE MOVE MOBILE FITNESS BUS: To give local youngsters a head start on a healthy lifestyle, Ochsner-owned Elmwood Fitness Center is bringing physical education to the classroom, literally! Starting January 23, the "On the Move" Mobile Fitness Bus will begin driving to elementary schools. The 50-foot long bus, loaded with kid-sized exercise and spinning equipment and a kitchen for healthy cooking, will offer twice-weekly workouts. On the Move will start at Green Charter Middle School in Uptown New Orleans, and George Cox Elementary on the Westbank, to get 4th and 5th graders in the fitness groove.
ELMWOOD BIGGEST LOSER CHALLENGE: From January 21 -March 30, Elmwood Fitness Center challenges local residents to shed unwanted pounds in its Elmwood Biggest Loser Challenge. It's being billed as the ultimate motivational program to lose weight, change your fitness level and improve your quality of life. Contestants will be divided into teams, guided by Elmwood's Certified Personal Trainers, with the objective to lose the greatest percentage of weight and inches. Cost is $100 per person.
OCHSNER VIDEO HEALTHLINKS: "We're entering an era where people have shorter attention spans and patients are actively searching the Internet for accurate medical information," explains Jack Gold, Director of Media Production Services at Ochsner. Therefore on January 15 Ochsner goes live with its ongoing, online video medical library. The Ochsner Healthlinks are 3-5 minute interviews with local physicians and patients on a variety of medical topics. New videos will be added bi-weekly in Flash format, which is easily downloaded from PC (Windows Media Player) and Mac (Quicktime) computers.
