Jefferson Parish Public School Health Services Department was recently awarded the Louisiana Safe and Supportive School Initiative grant from the Safe Healthy Youth Initiative for High Schools. The grant allowed the two Ochsner sponsored School Based Health Clinics at Bonnabel High School and John Ehret High School the opportunity to have their student led Wellness Councils host a HIV Rally titled “We Are The Change” on their campuses.

The rallies were held during lunch time on the school campuses allowing students to participate in games and activities associated with the rally. The Student Wellness Councils provided educational flyers, distributed T-Shirts, wrist bands, and also held a poster and essay contest drawing with chances to win Saints tickets.

Ms. Tamachia Davenport, Program Director for St. John #5 CAMP ACE Social Services/HIV program, spoke at the events educating students, staff, and administrators about various myths concerning STD’s and about the serious harmful effects of the HIV virus on the body.  The well attended rallies were fun as well as informative.
