At Ochsner, we take pride in providing quality healthcare that offers all of our patients peace of mind. A significant part of this involves keeping you safe while in our care. Patient safety requires that Ochsner staff and patients work together. Patients who are more involved in their healthcare have a better experience with us at Ochsner. If you are unable to participate, please ask a family member to do so on your behalf. Join our team and help us to help you.
Employee and Patient Identification
We want to make sure you know who we are and we know who you are. Providers should identify themselves by name. They should also identify you by name. Please make sure that your wristband has the correct information and that you wear it at all times. It should be checked before any procedures or tests. If the wristband falls off for any reason, please request a new one. In turn, all providers and other staff should also be wearing their Ochsner name badge at all times.
Medications and Allergies
Provide us with the name and dosage of all medications you take. Even vitamins, herbal supplements and over-the-counter supplements are important for us to know about.
Do not bring any medications from home unless you receive approval from your doctor, nurse or other hospital staff.
When you are given medication make sure you know the name of the medication and why it is being given to you.
Also, be sure to tell us if you have an allergy or reaction to any medication, food or latex.
Preventing the Spread of Germs
All Ochsner healthcare providers are expected to perform hand hygiene (washing hands or using hand sanitizers) before examining you. If someone does not perform hand hygiene or wear gloves, please ask them to do so.
You should also practice good personal hygiene. Wash your hands frequently, especially before eating, after using the bathroom, and before and after bandage changes.
Friends and family members who have colds or contagious illnesses should not visit the hospital.
Get vaccinated. Vaccines prevent illnesses that are contagious and can be serious.
Avoiding Falls and Pressure Ulcers
At Ochsner, we are committed to the national patient safety goals set annually by the Joint Commission, a nonprofit agency that accredits healthcare organizations based on safe, quality care. These goals are aimed to help us help our patients during their time spent in our care. Some of our primary goals are to continuously work towards lowering our Falls without Harm rate and our Pressure Ulcer rate.
