The following comments were posted in an online forum by Ochsner patient, Stephen Hooker. This forum serves as an online support group for individuals suffering from carcinoid cancer. Mr. Hooker was responding to the question, "Seeking Specialist Treatment - Where do I begin?"

Don't beat around the bush on this thing, go to the best in the world, The Neuroendocrine Program at Ochsner Medical Center, Kenner, LA. They have a full blown program with a number of specialists who tailor their approach and treatment for each location of a carcinoid.

Here in Columbia, SC, I had a surgeon tell me he could give me 5 more years after he chopped out some intestines, halved my liver and replaced my pancreas and part of my stomach with a Whipple procedure. I flew straight to Kenner where they basically laughed off that approach. Yes, I lost a few inches of intestine, but a different approach left my liver intact as well as my pancreas -- no Whipple. That was over a year ago. My life is great. Yes, I take Creon and have a monthly Sandostatin Depot LAR 30mg shot (a competent nurse gives the shot; it's smooth and easy, no pain, no side effects). I miss french fries and a rich candy bar, but that's partly to do with giving up my gall bladder. I see Dr. Woltering every 6 months and have a good time in New Orleans afterwards.

Keep your life. You don't have to travel halfway around the world to get excellent treatment. Don't put up with local guessing and experimentation. My Kenner surgical team was lead by Dr. Boudreaux who is an LSU professor of surgery and a pancreatic transplant surgeon as well as a specialist in hunting down and removing carcinoids. He easily peeled off the carcinoid from my pancreas, leaving it intact, and then plucked the others from deep in my liver with a small probe without the wholesale liver resection the Columbia surgeon advocated. Thanks to their great work during my 11 hour surgery, I was out of the hospital in less than four days.

Today over a year later, all my blood stats are perfect. My weight is better than before the Zebras tried to take over, thanks to Leigh Ann Burns, the team's dietitian. The Kenner team is flat-out the best. I have a great oncologist here in Columbia, but he defers to Dr. Woltering & Co. Take care of yourself and go straight to the best. They are a team of experts, not just one specialist.

I have suffered from horrible stomach and colon problems for years. When I came to Ochsner, I was in desperate need of hope - I felt like I was slowly dying. I'm from the Shreveport area and my GI doctor there referred me to Dr. J. Philip Boudreaux, a surgeon at Ochsner Medical Center-Kenner. Thank God he did!
That's where I found my hope! After Dr. Boudreaux and his staff spent several hours with me and reviewed my past medical history, he came up with a plan. I had surgery this past April - it turned out that I had a bad obstruction in my belly. It took him about six hours, but he got it fixed! I was only in the hospital for six days, and was able to travel back to Shreveport after my last day.
It's been 8 1/2 weeks since my surgery, and I'm doing great. I was given a second chance on life because Dr. Boudreaux, his staff and the rest of the hospital care team took such excellent care of me! Everyone communicated so well and the teamwork was the best I have ever seen. The entire staff was so kind and knowledgeable. Thank you, Ochsner!
Sincerely,

Thank you so much for taking such good care of D. and of doing such a great operation. You were most kind and thoughtful of her and of me and we appreciate all you did more than I can say. D. is doing very well and takes only ibuprofen for pain and usually 400 mg once a day.
Thank you very much for making copies of your operative notes and the pathology reports. You and the team made it so easy for me all through this time and your compassion, thoughtfulness, and keeping me informed were strong supports to both of us.
We look forward to seeing you soon!
Sincerely,

Dr. Boudreaux,
I would like to express my sincere thanks to both you and Dr. Anthony for your combined efforts to treat carcinoid patients.
The gift to perform skilled surgery and help heal others is truly a God-given talent.
Though words convey the appreciation I feel, it seems small in comparison to all you do.  I am so grateful! Thank you! My God bless both you and your families.
Sincerely,

Dr. Woltering,
I feel so blessed having you as our doc, with your true passion and knowledge of carcinoid! The time you devote to our visits is incredible, sharing your expertise! You seem to know my daughter thoughts and fears before she even expresses them and always address them with such tenderness! Thank you so much for making a very difficult situation into a glass half full one.  Know of my daily prayers for you and yours.

Dr. Boudreaux,
Thank you for your wonderful care shown to our sweet daddy during his illness and “home-going.” You went over and beyond what was expected and our family will always be grateful.

Thank you and your staff for your hard work and care you gave Daddy while he was in your hospitals. I never knew any medical staff that would try so hard to save my Daddy. God bless you all.

We have never seen such caring doctors as you and Dr. Le and the nurses in the ICU unit. We know you did everything you could for my husband but it was God’s time for him to go.

Dr. Woltering,
Our family was overwhelmed with the loving care shown to my husband when we were in your clinic and while he was in ICU after the surgery. We know Dr. Boudreaux and Dr. Le and the nurses did all they could and the surgery was good but it was God’s timing and not yours or mine.

Thanks for the bottom of our hearts to your wonderful staff and yourself for all you did.
