Cervical Cancer : About

Cervical cancer is the only gynecologic malignancy that can be prevented by regular screening. In fact, screening with the Pap smear has dramatically reduced the incidence of cervical cancer by detecting problems in the pre-cancerous phase. That’s why Ochsner’s Division of Gynecologic Oncology provides patients with the latest and most up-to-date diagnostic and treatment methods for abnormal Pap smears and invasive cervical cancer. Using a multi-disciplinary approach, our gynecologic oncologists work closely with the radiation oncologists and other members of the Ochsner Cancer Institute, providing patients with the latest and most advanced treatments for cervical cancer. Treatment of invasive cervical cancer may involve a range of options from conservative surgery with the preservation of fertility as a goal, and when appropriate, carried out with aggressive surgery. Sometimes, such a surgery is combined with radiation therapy and chemotherapy.
