The Nephrology Department cares for many patients with cancer, usually to treat kidney insufficiency due to cancer treating drugs.
Physicians also treat a specific cancer of the kidney called Renal Cell Carcinoma. If a patient is diagnosed, they are referred to the Oncology Section. Treatment usually necessitates surgery and many times the patient is tracked by Ochsner’s nephrology physicians afterwards because they are left with only one kidney and/or kidney dysfunction.
