The team reviews the biopsy pathology, correlates it with the mammography and breast ultrasound findings and recommends appropriate follow-up care.
Weekly Breast Cancer Conference
Selected breast cancer cases are presented and discussed by a team of radiologists, surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, pathologists and nurses. This group recommends treatment plans for these patients.
Support Services
The Lieselotte Tansey Breast Center at Ochsner is dedicated to educating and encouraging patients on the road to recovery. The following is a list of support groups and programs developed specifically for breast cancer patients.
Breast Cancer Support and Information Group
This program is offered once a month to all breast cancer patients and family members who are at least 18 years of age. The group assembles once a month and the format regularly includes a guest speaker and small group discussion. Parking is validated and refreshments are provided. The program is free of charge and you do not have to be an Ochsner patient to attend.
Look Good... Feel Better
Developed specifically for women going through chemotherapy or radiation therapy, Look Good… Feel Better teaches patients skills to improve and enhance their appearance through the use of cosmetics, wigs, turbans and scarves. The program focuses on beauty techniques that can help women cope with the temporary physical changes resulting from cancer treatment. Most importantly, Look Good… Feel Better is product-neutral. Volunteers and program participants do not promote any cosmetic product line or manufacturer. This program is made possible through an agreement between the American Cancer Society and the National Cosmetology Association, as well as the Cosmetic, Toiletry, and Fragrance Association.
Lymphedema Treatment Program
The Outpatient Therapy Department has several therapists specially trained in the treatment of lymphedema, which is the swelling of the arm or upper quadrant caused by breast cancer surgery or radiation. The program uses massage, compression bandaging and an exercise program to decrease swelling. A related support group meets quarterly where discharged patients can keep up-to-date on the latest information and see their therapist for a free check-up.
