The Interventional Cardiology Program is dedicated to the non-surgical management of patients with cardiac and peripheral vascular disorders. Our history of excellence and innovation is distinguished, as Ochsner Heart and Vascular Institute physicians have long been on the cutting-edge of new angioplasty technology. Our physicians are among the first in the world and the Gulf South to perform the following procedures:
- Coronary angioplasty and stenting
- Coronary angioscopy and intravascular ultrasound
- Renal artery stenting
- Subclavian, innominate and vertebral artery stenting
- Percutaneous closure of congenital heart defects
- Percutaneous opening of blocked heart valves
- Percutaneous limb salvage
- Percutaneous clot removal for heart and vascular blockages
- Radiation therapy for scar tissue in stents
- Percutaneous treatment of blocked veins (leg, chest, arm)
- Treatment of acute strokes with angioplasty
- Carotid stenting
- ASD/DFO closure
Current areas of new and developing technology offered at OHVI include Carotid stent placement, a new technique that may replace surgical therapy to prevent strokes. We also utilize emboli protection devices that prevent fragments of plaque from traveling downstream during angioplasty and stenting of bypass grafts. The best indication of quality in medicine is volume. This means that those who do more generally do it best. As a testimonial to our high quality and excellent outcomes, OHVI interventional cardiologists conduct one of the busiest academically-accredited interventional coronary and peripheral vascular programs in the nation.
