Digestive Disorders Center

Each year, millions of Americans suffer from some form of digestive disorders ranging from acid reflux disease and irritable bowel syndrome to life-threatening colon, rectal, esophageal or pancreatic cancer. These conditions can profoundly affect both the health and overall quality of life of those affected. While the diagnosis and treatment of many of these conditions can be relatively straightforward, there are often many disorders that present more subtle symptoms that may require complex evaluations and innovative management techniques to resolve.

Ochsner Medical Center - Baton Rouge

Digestive Care

Ochsner Baton Rouge's Gastroenterology Department provides comprehensive treatment for a range of digestive disorders. Patients can conveniently make appointments with physicians at Ochsner Health Center on Summa Avenue or Ochsner Health Center on O'Neal Lane. The Endoscopy Lab is located at Ochsner Medical Center - Baton Rouge at I-12 and O'Neal Lane.  In addition, the gastroenterology team works closely with Ochsner surgeons to provide additional treatment options for patients with digestive disorders.

GERD Treament
Ochsner Baton Rouge is the first in Louisiana to offer an incisionless surgical treatment called EsophyX TIF (transoral incisionless fundoplication) for patients that suffer with regular heartburn. EsophyX TIF is a surgical procedure performed through the mouth which reconstructs the barrier between the stomach and esophagus to prevent stomach fluids from refluxing up into the esophagus. EsophyX TIF is completely incisionless so it has less risk, reduced recovery time and no visible scar. It is an approved alternative treatment (instead of medications) for patients with chronic heartburn.

For more information and to find out if you are a candidate for EsophyX, contact us at 225-754-5023.  Ochsner Baton Rouge employs a full range of GERD diagnosis and treatment options, both surgical and non-surgical, including:
  • Upper endoscopy - used to scan the upper digestive tract
  • Bravo pH monitoring - uses a capsule to collect the patient's internal pH information
  • Manometry - used to measure the pressure inside the esophagus
  • Capsule endoscopy - a non-invasive method to see inside the esophagus and small intestine
  • Laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication - a laparoscopic surgical procedure to reinforce the "valve" between the esophagus and the stomach

Treatment for Colon Disorders
Ochsner Baton Rouge's Endoscopy Lab is using the latest high-definition endoscope for colonoscopies on a daily basis. This new system provides sharper definition and clearer images of the body's internal organs and systems. The technology allows doctors to detect smaller lesions and more accurately diagnose diseases of the upper and lower gastrointestinal tract, including colorectal cancer.   Ochsner Baton Rouge employs a full range of diagnosis and treatment options for colon disorders, both surgical and non-surgical, including:

  • Colonoscopy - used to scan the colon for polyps
  • ERBE - argon plasma coagulation - a blade-free procedure to eliminate hard to reach polyps
  • Polypectomy - a procedure to remove polyps from the colon
  • Laser and laparoscopic colectomy - a less-invasive surgical procedure to remove part of the colon, as well as nearby lymph nodes
