Barrett's esophagus is a condition in which the normal lining of the esophagus is eroded by the continual refluxing of stomach acid into the esophagus. The lining of the esophagus replaced by tissue that is similar to the cells that are found in the small intestine. This process is called intestinal metaplasia. Barrett's is a benign condition, but does increase the risk of developing esophageal adenocarcinoma
