What is a patency capsule?
Prior to a video capsule endoscopy, your doctor may have you swallow a patency capsule. The object of this capsule is to access areas where there might be narrowing or structuring that will contraindicate the use of the video capsule endoscopy.
How is it employed?
You will come into the hospital and swallow the capsule. Your doctor will then order an abdominal film approximately 30 hours from the time the capsule is ingested. At this point, the capsule should have progressed and passed into the small intestine. If it has not, this may indicate a narrowing. If this does occur, your doctor will cancel the video capsule endoscopy and pursue other studies.
What happens to the capsule?
The capsule will dissolve on its own.
