A virtual colonoscopy uses computer technology and radiological imaging to procedure 3-D images of the colon. It is used as a screening modality for colon cancer.

Do I have to take a bowel prep?

Yes. Just like with a colonoscopy, your colon should be clear of fecal matter.

If a polyp is found, can it be removed?

While a virtual colonoscopy can detect the presence of a polyp or other colonic abnormality, it cannot be removed. If any abnormality is assessed, you will be scheduled for a colonoscopy.

Is a virtual colonoscopy for me?

If you have a relatively-low risk for colon cancer, virtual colonoscopy may be beneficial. However, kin mind that if a polyp is found, you will need to schedule a separate colonoscopy and take another bowel prep. Furthermore, if you have a history of colon polyps or a family history of colon cancer, virtual colonoscopy may not be the best option for you.
