Lymphedema Program : About

Complete Decongestive Therapy

What is Lymphedema?

Lymphedema is a very common and serious condition, affecting at least three million Americans.

Secondary lymphedema, which causes swelling may affect limbs, face, genitals and trunk, follows breast cancer surgery, particularly among those patients who undergo radiation therapy following the removal of axillary lymph nodes.

Primary lymphedema is caused by a developmental abnormality of the lymphatic system, which is either congenital or hereditary. Swelling in primary lymphedema generally affects the lower extremities.

About the Program

Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) is a non-invasive, multi-component approach to effectively treat and manage drainage lymphedema and related conditions. CDT consists of a combination of manual lymph drainage, compression therapy, decongestive exercises and skin care.

Treatment is performed in a private setting by our certified occupational therapist, and under the direction of the physician.
