Ochsner’s Department of Hospital Medicine is a dynamic, growing group of more than 50 physicians and mid-level providers dedicated to quality outcomes, performance improvement, academics, and leadership development. Our Hospitalists practice at locations in and around Greater New Orleans and the North Shore of Lake Pontchartrain. Our staff has played an integral role in Ochsner Medical Center and its West Bank Campus being ranked in 7 medical specialties in U.S. News & World Report’s 2011-2012 Best Hospitals, and in being named one of Thomson Reuters Top 15 Major Teaching Hospitals and 100 Best Hospitals in the United States.
Many of the awards received by our Health System and Department are thanks to our continuous commitment to performance improvement. Many opportunities to be involved in PI projects and programs exist. Some of these include our monthly Mortality and Morbidity Conferences, Documentation Excellence/Coding Education Program, standardizing order sets, transitions in care, pursuit of the ideal discharge process, and our Inpatient Diabetes Program which recently received a Certificate of Distinction by the Joint Commission for Inpatient Diabetes Care.
Our Department has also made strides in Academics as a Hospitalist Track has been developed within Ochsner’s Internal Medicine Residency Program. This track is designed to expose house staff to Hospital Medicine-specific rotations during the elective months of their second and third years. In addition, the Ochsner Clinical School’s one-of-a-kind partnership with the University of Queensland Medical School has also had its first group of third year students rotating in Hospital Medicine in 2011.
In addition to all of these initiatives and programs, Ochsner’s Department of Hospital Medicine is also very active in the Society of Hospital Medicine. Each year, along with Emory University, the departments co-host a regional conference, rotating between New Orleans and Atlanta. Continuing education and leadership development are held in high regard within the department. A CME allowance along with encouraged participation reinforces our leadership within the Hospital Medicine community.
