The Department of Ophthalmology & Optometry includes over 25 ophthalmologists and optometrists who provide ophthalmic and optometric care to thousands of patients in the New Orleans and Baton Rouge regions. The Ophthalmology & Optometry staff functions as a group practice with each member offering complementary interests in the structure and function of the eye.
A premier regional leader in ophthalmic care and education, the Department facilitates the training and development of future ophthalmologists, optometrists, and support staff by participation in the LSU/Ochsner Ophthalmology residency Training Program, the Optometry Residency Program and the Delgado Ophthalmic Technician Program. Ochsner Health System’s vast resources enable our Department to include the availability of specialists in virtually every medical discipline as well as access to the most advanced research and technology.

What is Ophthalmology?
Ochsner Health System’s Ophthalmology Department offers individualized diagnosis and treatment by specialists who are dedicated to the clinical and surgical care of eye problems, as well as medical education and research of eye disorders and their treatments. We offer a full range of services for the treatment of advanced eye disease and corrective surgery, providing comprehensive diagnosis and treatment for patients of all ages for the following eye disorders and conditions:

- Botox for blepharospasm
- Orbital tumors
- Reconstructive eye surgery and orbital fractures
- Repair of retinal detachments

The optometry section was founded when Dr. Lionel Boudreaux and Dr. John Labbe joined the physician staff at Ochsner Medical Center in 1987. The section has developed to include 10 full-time Doctors of Optometry who provide optometric are to thousands of patients who are covered by a variety of health and vision plans at the Ochsner Medical Center and at many of the Ochsner neighborhood clinics. With sub-specialization in contact lens fitting, low-vision evaluation, pediatric optometric care and glaucoma, we fulfill a variety of patient needs within the Department of Ophthalmology and Optometry.
An optometry residency program and the teaching of students pursuing the degree of Doctor of Optometry have helped to make the Ochsner Optometry program a premier regional leader in optometric care and education.
