Low vision is a reduction in visual acuity and or visual field that is not adequate for a person's needs. A low vision examination is performed to provide the patient with prescriptive devices, which will aid with their decreased vision. Examples of prescriptive devices include high-powered glasses, magnifiers, telescopes, loupes, sunglass filters and closed circuit televisions. Eye conditions where a low vision examination may be helpful include macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, retinitis pigmentosa, and congenital eye diseases. After having a low vision examination, many patients with decreased vision may be able to read again and function better on a daily basis.
