History

Pediatric gastroenterology is the investigation and treatment of disorders of the digestive tract, pancreas and liver in children. At Ochsner, the primary goal is to provide comprehensive, empathetic care for children with digestive disorders while searching for ways to improve their care and ways to better manage such problems for all children in the future.

Pediatric Gastroenterology Services

Located within the Ochsner Children’s Health Center, the Gastroenterology Section is able to provide care with a dedicated group of consultants in an environment that is smaller and more efficient than other centers. The most common conditions treated are gastroesophageal reflux (vomiting) in infants and children, abdominal pain, diarrhea, inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's and ulcerative colitis), constipation and jaundice. The section also has experience in treating newly recognized disorders such as abdominal migraine and eosinophilic ("allergic") esophagitis. Endoscopy services are also provided. The section is able to provide targeted therapy for inflammatory bowel disease, eosinophilic esophagitis, cyclic vomiting and chronic diarrhea of infancy. Each of these conditions has specific findings and requires treatment with novel medications that were not previously available and not generally known to community pediatricians.
