Pediatric cancer is a catastrophic illness, although potentially curable. The evaluation and treatment of young patients requires close interaction among all the pediatric sub-specialties, including pediatric intensive care, infectious disease and cardiology. That’s why Ochsner's Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Section provides multidisciplinary, comprehensive care for children with cancer and blood disorders. The section’s team of specialists includes pediatric hematologist, oncologists, surgeons, neurosurgeons and radiation oncologists. Nurses and social workers proficient in the care of these youngsters are also integral parts of the team.
The most common cancer in children is leukemia – specifically acute lymphoblastic and acute myeloid – followed by various tumors like neuroblastoma, Wilms’ tumor, lymphoma, brain tumors, sarcomas of soft tissues and bone. The particular blood disorders, meanwhile, consist of a variety of anemias, thrombocytopenias and neutropenias.
