Prep Instructions: ERCP

If you are scheduled for a morning procedure, you should not have any food or liquids after midnight.

If you are scheduled for an afternoon procedure you may have clear liquids until 4 hours prior to your procedure.


  • Water, coffee or decaffeinated coffee (no milk or cream)
  • Tea, iced tea, herbal tea
  • Carbonated beverages (soft drinks) regular or sugar free
  • Gelatin, plain or fruit flavored. (no red gelatin)
  • Apple juice, grape juice, cranberry juice, juicy juice
  • Gastorade, Powerade, Crystal Lite, Kool Aid
  • Lemonade, limeade
  • Clear fat-free beef or chicken broth
  • Bouillon, clear consommé
  • Snowball, popsicles
  • Hard candy, sugar salt

Please note: if your procedure is scheduled with General Anesthesia you CAN NOT have any liquids prior to procedure regardless of the scheduled time.

You may take your regular medications with a small sip of water unless otherwise instructed by your physician

You must arrange for a ride to and from the procedure. You will receive sedation and will not be able to drive yourself home or perform any complex tasks for 12 hours after receiving the sedation.

If you are on Plavix, please check with the doctor who prescribed and monitors your medication to see if he/she will approve stopping the Plavix for 7-10 days.

If you are on Coumadin, please check with the prescribing doctor or Coumadin clinic that monitors and adjusts your dosage to see if Coumadin can be stopped for 3-5 days prior to the procedure.

If your doctor does not approve holding the dosage, please inform the Endoscopy scheduling nurse as soon as possible.

If you are a diabetic, please follow instructions that are mailed to you.

Please note, before stopping any of the above medications, it is important that you check with your prescribing doctor.
