Information for patients and families
THE OCHSNER ADDICTIVE BEHAVIOR UNIT
Whether your problem is drugs or any number of other compulsive, destructive behaviors, the course of addiction is predictable and progressive. Pain, confusion and hopelessness result as you become emotionally, physically and spiritually isolated.
THE THREE C's OF Addictive Behavior
You have a COMPULSION to use and to pursue a destructive pattern of behavior. Your priorities change uncomfortably as the compulsion becomes your central focus.
You are unable to CONTROL your behavior, no matter how hard you try. You feel like you are trapped and you are losing the ability to direct your own life.
You continue the destructive behavior despite obvious negative CONSEQUENCES involving your family, job, and/or health. Trapped inside your addiction, you are running out of choices as your world becomes increasingly limited.
WE TREAT ADDICTION AS A DISEASE
Our comprehensive program skillfully combines the disease approach to addiction with the most advanced medical and psychological treatment modalities available. We are adept at distinguishing between addiction and any other medical or psychological illness, pinpointing a treatable problem, and formulating the most effective treatment plan possible.
The Ochsner Addictive Behavior Unit provides treatment for a number of addictive disorders including:
• Alcohol Abuse and Dependence
• Drug Abuse and Dependence
• Pathological Gambling
We treat every aspect of addiction, while managing patient care at the most cost-effective level. Treatment plans are individually tailored to meet the needs of the patient, as well as the patient's family and employer. Efforts are made to minimize the disruption of the patient's life due to illness.

SCOPE OF SERVICES
Partial Hospitalization Program and Intensive Outpatient Program, Family Treatment, and Aftercare Services
Partial Hospitalization and Intensive Outpatient Program
Patients entering the Ochsner Addictive Behavior Unit receive an extensive medical, psychological, and psychosocial assessment. Medically supervised detoxification is provided whenever necessary. Patients attend the program all day but are allowed to go home at night and on weekends.
Our unique program combines intensive cognitive/behavioral therapy with an emphasis on 12 Step recovery through Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous. Patients attend educational lecture sessions to learn about the disease of addiction and accept their inability to control it. During group therapy sessions, patients confront their denial and develop new skills to replace the older, ineffective behavior styles typically present in addiction.
Other features of the program include:
• Relapse prevention
• Stress management
• Communication, Assertiveness and Relaxation training
• Strength training
• Attendance at community meetings of Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous
• 12 Step and Big Book Study
Family members are as affected by the disease of addiction as the patient and need treatment in a parallel fashion. Family members of patients in the Ochsner Addictive Behavior Unit are encouraged to attend educational lecture sessions, where they learn to recognize ways they may have played a part in behaviors that perpetuate the disease, and they are encouraged to identify and begin meeting their own needs. Family members attend educational sessions with the patient where they work on developing a healthier family system. They are introduced to their own 12 Step support groups and encouraged to pursue their individual recovery programs.
Ochsner offers individual therapy for family members who wish to address the issues of co-dependency of adult children of dysfunctional families.
Ochsner also offers family therapy to address dysfunctional family patterns related to addiction.
After completing the initial intensive phase of the program, patients are encouraged to attend a minimum of one year of aftercare activities consisting of weekly aftercare group, individual therapy as needed, psychiatric care as needed, random urine screens, and attendance at 12 step meetings in their community.
