Using medicated stents to prevent re-narrowing of a blocked artery is a fairly new procedure. These medicated stents prevent scar tissue builds up around the stent, which occurred in previous un-medicated stents. To receive a medicated stent, patients must be able to take blood thinners for six to twelve months, must not have a bleeding disorder, and must not be undergo surgery in the near future.
